In 1977 a “Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Peoples of the Americas” was held at UN Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Stephen Gaskin, who was the Chairman of Plenty’s Board of Directors at the time, went along with the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) delegation as an observer. Plenty’s experience in Guatemala had opened our eyes to the kinds of oppression the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas had been dealing with since Columbus. We had also gained a new appreciation for the power and significance of their ancient cultures. One result of Stephen’s participation was Plenty getting connected with activist leaders from many Indigenous Nations.
